CALABARZON Info Officers, Media Practitioners learn techniques on writing for radio

The Communicators’ Network for Nutrition in Region 4A (CNN4A) learned tips on writing for a radio plug during the group’s visit to the Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC) in Pasay City during its Capacity Building Session last April 25, 2014.

Dennis Antenor, Jr., MBC Network Creative and DZRH News Television Production Head, served as the resource speaker. He shared his own recommendations and reminders on writing for radio plugs.

Antenor summed up the lecture into seven points: (1) discuss what the client wants, (2) beginning of the scripts is critical, (3) know what to say, (4) deliver it clearly, (5) speak the language of your target market, (6) find the boiling points of the material, and (7) just have one call to action or one core message.

He stressed that based on his 15 years of experience in radio, the effectiveness of the radio plug or commercial is not dependent on the duration of the entire plug.

“Be it a 15-, 30- 45- or 60-seconder radio plug, what is important that you connect with the target market and convey your message,” he said, adding that one effective way to connect is through emotion and that should be given high importance when writing the script.

After the lecture, the members of CNN4A underwent a workshop, writing a script for radio using the tips and techniques taught by Antenor.  The workshop output focused on Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos, healthy lifestyle, consumption of vegetables, and benefits of using iodized salt to prevent iodine deficiency disorders.

According to Ma. Janet Buelo, Provincial Information Officer of Quezon Province and President of CNN4A, though she has been in radio broadcasting for a long time, she still learned additional techniques on radio production from Antenor.

She also said that before most of the announcers or DJ's focused more on just having a good voice; but now their personality is also key for the audience to stay tuned in the program whether through radio or television.

Also part of the visit was a study tour of MBC, where they met some DJs of the various radio stations of MBC such as DZRH, Easy Rock, Love Radio, Aksyon Radyo, Yes FM, The Beat FM, Hot FM and Radyo Natin.

The Capacity Building Session was part of the two-day activity of the CNN4A.
On April 24, 2014, CNN4A held its second quarter meeting at Lancaster Hotel, Mandaluyong City.  Discussed during the meeting were organizational concerns, committee reports and plan of action in view of the revised Local Media Plan for 2014.

The group also welcomed new members of the group like Anthony Mateo from Rizal Province and Julie Caoile from the City of Biñan.

CNN4A is group of provincial and city information officers and media practitioners from the provinces and cities of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon. It was formed almost two years ago through the initiative of the National Nutrition Council Region IV-A headed by its Nutrition Program Coordinator Carina Santiago.
