CNN 4-A media service caravan: Breastfeeding month celebration 2014, idinaos sa Lucena City

Caridad Diamante, CNAO Azenith Ramos at Atty. Sunshine Abcede. (V.McGowan- PIO Lucena/ RMO- PIA-Quezon)

Rhaetia Marie Abcede-Llaga bilang co-chairman ng Committee on Health sa Sangguniang Panglunsod, DILG City Director Marcial Juangco, Dr. Juvy Paz Purino bilang Representative ng Department of Health, Association of Barangay Captains President Hermilando Alcala Jr., City School Division Supt.

( PIO Lucena/ RMO-PIA, Quezon)

CALABARZON Info Officers, Media Practitioners learn techniques on writing for radio

The Communicators’ Network for Nutrition in Region 4A (CNN4A) learned tips on writing for a radio plug during the group’s visit to the Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC) in Pasay City during its Capacity Building Session last April 25, 2014.

Dennis Antenor, Jr., MBC Network Creative and DZRH News Television Production Head, served as the resource speaker. He shared his own recommendations and reminders on writing for radio plugs.

Antenor summed up the lecture into seven points: (1) discuss what the client wants, (2) beginning of the scripts is critical, (3) know what to say, (4) deliver it clearly, (5) speak the language of your target market, (6) find the boiling points of the material, and (7) just have one call to action or one core message.

He stressed that based on his 15 years of experience in radio, the effectiveness of the radio plug or commercial is not dependent on the duration of the entire plug.

“Be it a 15-, 30- 45- or 60-seconder radio plug, what is important that you connect with the target market and convey your message,” he said, adding that one effective way to connect is through emotion and that should be given high importance when writing the script.

After the lecture, the members of CNN4A underwent a workshop, writing a script for radio using the tips and techniques taught by Antenor.  The workshop output focused on Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos, healthy lifestyle, consumption of vegetables, and benefits of using iodized salt to prevent iodine deficiency disorders.

According to Ma. Janet Buelo, Provincial Information Officer of Quezon Province and President of CNN4A, though she has been in radio broadcasting for a long time, she still learned additional techniques on radio production from Antenor.

She also said that before most of the announcers or DJ's focused more on just having a good voice; but now their personality is also key for the audience to stay tuned in the program whether through radio or television.

Also part of the visit was a study tour of MBC, where they met some DJs of the various radio stations of MBC such as DZRH, Easy Rock, Love Radio, Aksyon Radyo, Yes FM, The Beat FM, Hot FM and Radyo Natin.

The Capacity Building Session was part of the two-day activity of the CNN4A.
On April 24, 2014, CNN4A held its second quarter meeting at Lancaster Hotel, Mandaluyong City.  Discussed during the meeting were organizational concerns, committee reports and plan of action in view of the revised Local Media Plan for 2014.

The group also welcomed new members of the group like Anthony Mateo from Rizal Province and Julie Caoile from the City of Biñan.

CNN4A is group of provincial and city information officers and media practitioners from the provinces and cities of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon. It was formed almost two years ago through the initiative of the National Nutrition Council Region IV-A headed by its Nutrition Program Coordinator Carina Santiago.

Nutrition evaluators visit Santa Rosa for practicum

The Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team/Regional Technical Working Group of the CALABARZON and MIMAROPA Regions of the National Nutrition Council visited the City of Santa Rosa for their Orientation-Practicum last March 18-19, 2014.

According to Carina Santiago, Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator for NNC-
CALABARZON and Officer-in-Charge in NNC-MIMAROPA, the teams “agreed to have this activity to improve their individual knowledge and skills in assessing efficiency and effectiveness of Local Level Plan Implementation, especially now that we have new members in the RNET/RTWG, as well as to actualize and standardize protocol during actual MELLPI and BNS evaluation.”

The National Nutrition Council in Region 4A and 4B already has the schedule for the Monitoring and Evaluation of the Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) Evaluation for the year. The City of Santa Rosa was scheduled to be visited last April 22-24, 2014.

“We chose to visit the City of Santa Rosa because we believe this is a very good venue for the orientation-practicum as your city has been awarded as the 2012 Outstanding City in the CALABARZON Region in the Field of nutrition programs and has been honored many times during the previous years,” said Santiago. The group visited the barangays of Kanluran, Caingin and Tagapo for their practicum.

The group was received by Vice Mayor Arnel DC. Gomez during their courtesy call at the Santa Rosa City Hall on March 18, 2014.

As he welcomed the group, Gomez expressed openness to receive suggestions from the team so that the City can better improve its nutrition services.

Gomez, along with City Nutrition Action Officer Carmencita Catindig and City Councilor Antonia Laserna, welcomed the group. Mayor Arlene B. Arcillas was out of the country at that time for the “Urbanisation and Sustainable Development,” an event organized by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) held in Berlin, Germany from March 19-22, 2014.

The City recently received the Green Banner Award from the National Nutrition Council Region IV-A during the 2013 Joint Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony for CALABARZON & MIMAROPA held on December 6, 2013 at the Heritage Hotel, Pasay City. Mayor Arcillas personally received the accolade.

Aside from the Green Banner Award, Barangay Tagapo also received the City Outstanding Barangay and Outstanding Barangay in the Region, while Barangay Nutrition Scholar Menue Batitis assigned in Barangay Tagapo was also recognized as the City Outstanding BNS and for being a Finalist in the Search for the 2012 Regional Outstanding BNS in the CALABARZON Region. Sta. Rosa City learns about good nutrition on air

Rosenian mothers’ ways on learning about nutrition got an upgrade as the City of Santa Rosa participated in the Nutrition School on the Air (NSOA) of the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region IV-A during the whole month of March.

NSOA used broadcast media, specifically radio, as a means to disseminate essential nutrition information to the public, to enhance knowledge and practice of good nutrition, and to promote consumption of vegetables and fruits.

But now we have identified participants and submitted their names to the NNC. Susundin na rin natin ang iba pang isinasaad sa mechanics ng NSOA,” explained City Nutrition Action Officer (CNAO) Carmencita Catindig, adding that they have a minimum of 10 participants per barangay or an estimated 180 participants in the whole City.

Catindig also said that the NSOA is a lot like Pabasa sa Nutrisyon, except that learning is facilitated by a radio host.

“Participating mothers in the City of Santa Rosa are now tuning in at DZJV ZBNI 1458 kHz every day from Monday to Friday, 1:00 PM-2:00 PM for the NSOA. Kasabay na ginagawa rin ito sa probinsya ng Cavite, Rizal at Quezon,” said the CNAO. She clarified that all interested individuals 15 years old and above are qualified to join the NSOA and is not limited to mothers only.

Known as Paaralang Panghimpapawid Ukol sa Gulay, Prutas at Wastong Nutrisyon in Pilipino, the NSOA has 10 modules on promotion of good nutrition and another 10 modules on fruits and vegetables.

According to the mechanics of the NSOA, after submitting the names of participants to the NNC Regional Office, a pre-test or diagnostic test is given. Aside from the pre-test, there will be daily quizzes after every module finished.

“Participants will answer the simple questions announced by radio host and they will give their answer sheet with their full names on it to the assigned Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) in their area. This will be collected weekly,” said Catindig. Correct answers to the questions are announced by the host every Monday.

Just like in an actual school, there will also be a post-test to evaluate the learning of the participants by comparing the results to that of the pre-test.

The NNC will give certificates of participation and completion to our participants as well as medals in recognition of their good performance. Kaya naman we are really looking forward to graduating our first batch of NSOA participants this year,” Catindig shared. (CIO Santa Rosa/MVC)

For championing the cause of promoting good nutrition among its people, the City of Santa Rosa now brandishes another award - the Green Banner Award from the National Nutrition Council Region IV-A during the 2013 Joint Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony for CALABARZON & MIMAROPA held on December 6, 2013 at the Heritage Hotel, Pasay City. Mayor Arlene B. Arcillas personally received the accolade.

Mayor Arcillas said that she is very pleased that the City is once again being recognized for its nutrition programs. “For years now, we have been aiming for the zero-malnourished children status when it comes to the nutritional status of our constituents especially the children. I am happy that each year we are able to get closer to reaching that goal and this award attests to that,” she said.

She also expressed regret that the city failed to hit the mark last year. “We were very disappointed when we were not able to maintain our Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Award but we just looked at it as a challenge to improve our programs on nutrition and think of more innovations,” the Mayor said. She added that the City Nutrition Office, headed by City Nutrition Action Officer Carmencita Catindig, is working diligently to address the gaps in the previous evaluation and to help secure the City’s standing as a champion of nutrition.

Aside from the Green Banner Award, the City also received two more awards. Brgy. Tagapo received the City Outstanding Barangay and Outstanding Barangay in the Region. The Barangay was recognized for its innovative programs implemented during the administration of former Barangay Chairperson Marietta Bartolazo.

Bartolazo started the School On Wheels to Relevant Education Access Program (SOW to REAP) in September 2010 which benefitted indigent children aged 3-6 years old who, for financial constraints, cannot attended a day care school. Classes are held twice a week in select five areas in Barangay Tagapo. The parents of the beneficiary children also learned information relevant to their needs and condition such as proper child care, benefits of breastfeeding, family aid treatment, home management and livelihood training.

Another beneficial project of Bartolazo is the Adopt-A-Lot Program which gave an opportunity for residents to earn extra income by planting crops on idle lots while being able to assist in keeping the surrounding clean and green.

Meanwhile, Barangay Nutrition Scholar Menue Batitis assigned in Brgy. Tagapo was also recognized as the City Outstanding BNS and for being a Finalist in the Search for the 2012 Regional Outstanding BNS in the CALABARZON Region. Batitis, through the support of then Brgy. Chairperson Bartolazo, also initiated innovations herself which led to her getting distinguished as the City Outstanding BNS. Some of the programs she mentioned are ‘Sagip-Buhay Kontra Malnutrisyon’ where she encourages mothers with four or more children to undergo ligation; ‘Pagbubuntis Mo, Aalagaan Ko’, a program where she assists mothers in applying for an ID for the PhilHealth ng Masa Program of the City Government to aid in the mothers’ delivery.

While Mayor Arcillas is happy with the award, she said, “More than any award, our greatest source of happiness and satisfaction is seeing our children grow healthy and well-nourished.  This, to us, makes the City of Santa Rosa a wealthy city far beyond any riches.”

Recent awards received by the City were:
·         First Year Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) Maintenance Award given during the 2011 National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony held in October 25, 2011.
·         Pabasa sa Nutrisyon Maintenance Award given by the Provincial Nutrition Action Office in 2011.
·         Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition (CROWN) award given during the National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony held on November 4, 2010.
·         Hall of Fame Award on the Implementation of Pabasa sa Nutrisyon awarded by the Philippine Association of Nutrition in 2009
·         Exemplary Award on the Implementation of Pabasa sa Nutrisyon awarded by Philippine Association of Nutrition in  2008
·         Green Banner Award (Outstanding City on Nutrition Program in CALABARZON Region IV A) by the National Nutrition Council in 2007-2009
·         Outstanding City on the Implementation of PABASA sa Nutrisyon awarded by Philippine Association of Nutrition in 2007 (CIO Santa Rosa/MVC)

The two candidates of the City of Santa Rosa for the first ever Search for Ms. Calabarzon BNS 2013 came home with titles – Rosiel Madrigal was crowned as the Ms. BNS 2013 for Category A (Ages 20-39) while Sarah Villacarillo was 1st Runner Up for Category B (Ages 40-60) . The coronation was conducted during the 1st Regional Barangay Nutrition Scholars Congress held last October 18, 2013 at the Ynares Center, Antipolo City.

In the question and answer portion, Madrigal was asked “As a BNS, what else can she contribute to her barangay?”

Madrigal described her experience as a happy one because despite her age, she was still able to compete in a beauty pageant. Aside from being the Ms. Calabarzon BNS 2013 (Category A), she also received the Best in Sportswear and Best in Casual Wear.

It was an unforgettable experience for Villacarillo as well. “It is a big privilege for me to join this first ever search for Ms.Calabarzon BNS. It really boosted my morale and confidence,” she said.

During the Q & A, she was asked if it is worthy to regularly hold events like the Regional BNS Congress.

Both Madrigal and Villacarillo are thankful to City Nutrition Officer Carmencita Catindig and their fellow BNS for their support starting from the pre-pageant held last September 10 at the Ynares Hall until the coronation. They are grateful as well to their respective barangay chairpersons and to City Mayor Arlene B. Arcillas who supported them not only during the contest but in all their programs under the City Nutrition Office.

Meanwhile, Catindig is very happy for her two Barangay Nutrition Scholars who made the City proud not only for shining in the Ms. Calabarzon BNS 2013 but also for performing their duties everyday as BNS.

The Ms. Calabarzon BNS 2013 is one of the highlights of the first ever Regional Barangay Nutrition Scholars Congress with the theme "BNS 4A, Ikaw na, The Best Ka!" The congress aimed to help recognize the importance of BNS in the implementation of nutrition programs nationwide, improve their skills, build camaraderie and boost their morale.

In her speech, NNC Calabarzon Nutrition Program Coordinator Carina Santiago called on all BNS who attended the congress to memorize by heart the 2012 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF), “Sapagkat iyan ang gagamitin ninyong armas sa pagpapalaganap ng wastong nutrisyon sa inyong barangay.” Attendees came from the five provinces and 17 cities in the region.

NNC Calabarzon organized the event in cooperation with the Regional Nutrition Committee, Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars Inc. of Region IV-A, Regional Technical Working Group on Nutrition, Provincial and City Nutrition Action Officers, and Communicators’ Network for Nutrition in Region IV-A.
